Save the trail maps before you leave the network. On the trail, your GPS works without a mobile signal and the map shows where you are, what is ahead, and how long until dark.
1 · Save maps before you go
Do this at your hotel on Wi-Fi. Each trail pack saves the 3D terrain relief map, the traced trail, the waypoints and these pages to your phone. Satellite photos are kept only for areas you have already viewed.

112 works from any phone, even without a SIM, wherever there is any network. An SMS often gets through where calls fail.
Before you step on the trail
- Save the trail pack and open this page once in airplane mode to check that it works.
- Charge your phone and a power bank. Cold drains batteries, so keep the phone inside your jacket.
- Tell someone at your hotel your trail and expected return time.
- Start early. Plan to reach the temple by early afternoon.
- Turn back at once if headache, breathlessness or nausea get worse. Descending is the cure for altitude sickness.
- Do not leave the marked trail in fog. Wait for it to lift.
